Depression in Men
Yes, it’s real… and, no, you’re not less of a man for it.
Think it can’t happen to you? Of course not, you are a MAN… and MEN can’t be depressed! Depression is for women and people who are soft! Right?
Well… think again.
You might not want to acknowledge or admit it, but depression in men is real and a serious issue! Your depression is real!
And talking about how bad you might be feeling isn’t griping or complaining. You are taking the first steps in making yourself better.
So, how do you know if you are depressed?
Well, check your mood. Has it been down lately?
Are you feeling fatigue more than usual?
Don’t feel like doing the things you used to… like working on your car or house… or playing with the kids?
How about being around people you used to really enjoy? Still hang out with them?
Is your sex drive much lower than what you want it to be?
Depression sometimes looks different in men.
Your depression can be caused from several different things… including aging, loss of job, loss of friends, or use of medications/drugs.
What you know about depression in women and adolescents is also true in men… except men tend to be more irritable, aggressive, and maybe even hostile!
Maybe your wife and kids have mentioned that you have become a real “jerk.” You might have thought it was their issue – maybe even their fault. Well, maybe they have something to do with it, but blaming them won’t do anyone any good.
Feeling better…
Easy for me to say, but for MEN, we need to feel effective and purposeful. Sometimes, completing a project (science project with the kids, fixing the leaky faucet) can bring some relief.
In coaching, we will build on what made you feel like a man in the past and how you can take the next step in returning to your old form! Call me today!
This is how I have helped MEN in the past.
First, most of them did not know they were “depressed.” They discussed problems in their relationships with wives, girlfriends, and their children. Often, they described being “angry,” “unmotivated,” “worried,” “feeling empty.”
Here is where we will start…
We will focus first on the specific situations and patterns where you are not at your best.
We will look at the context of those situations to pinpoint how your emotions and thoughts were experienced. Then, we will look at the negative patterns that have developed over time. Next, we will “do as men do” and seek out solutions to how the negative pattern can be disrupted and then changed for the better.
Much of what makes men depressed has to do with our ability to feel effective.
When you are an active participant in the coaching and positive change process, you will notice right away a change in how you feel and perceive (think about) yourself.
Then, you will go and put the plans into action. I will hold you accountable through check-ins even in-between sessions (if you are “down” or willing).
Getting back to the best version of you…
If you notice that you’re not feeling the way you used to…
If you’re not the proud, strong, fun, and loving man that everyone loves, and you want the people in your life to get the best version of you again…
If you’re ready to do something you’re likely not used to doing – talking about YOU and how YOU are feeling….
Then, please, give me a call for a free consultation.
And for the women seeking help for your husband, boyfriend, father, or sibling… I want to let you know that pushing them to get help may do the opposite of what you ultimately want for them.
You, too, can call me for a consultation to discuss how you can help the man in your life who is suffering: (657) 345-4681
